The farm runs Sheep and Cattle, and like most New Zealand sheep farms there is often a stray lamb brought Home.
The end result is of course a pet Sheep, where
most are partial to a little hand feeding.
All our Hereford bulls have been
sold now and they all have big smiles on their faces as they chase dairy
heifers around in fields of spring grass. We have started buying
in more Hereford weaner bulls to carry through the next winter.
All lambs have been
sold now and tupping is practically over. In May the ewes will
be scanned to determine how many are having twins and triplets.
These ewes will be fed more grass than those that are only carrying single
lambs. July will see the start of lambing.
The new grass is growing well and will have its first grazing at the
beginning of May.
Lambing is all
over with very good lambing percentage of 145%. A great number
of the lambs will be heading to Europe on a boat before Christmas.
The ewes and lambs still on the farm will be shorn before Christmas.
Grass growth has been poor this spring and so we have reduced our cattle
numbers in order to give the lambs more feed.
